HIGHLY COMMENDED 2008: The Nature of Home;

A Competition Run by the Concrete Centre in 2008 for a maximum 160sqm family home constructed using heavy weight principals, designed to be as Ecologically friendly as possible in both construction, use and demolition.

My response sited on Bathwick Hill over looking the city of Bath was to look at the basic premise of the home as both shelter from the elements and protection from the external world outside. It was loosed based on the idea of the garden wall through which one passes into a series of passages and routes leading out on the landscape and rural hills over looking , and reflecting on the city of Bath from above. This wall acted as a spine from which rooms were arrayed according to their relationship to the sun, Bedrooms facing toward the rising sun living areas benefiting from the southerly and western afternoon and evening sun. The structural system employed was based on heavy exposed massive walls that form a radial pattern from the spine wall which was made of Stabilised Rammed Earth. In addition to this mass the large over sailing roof made of concrete would mean that the building could operate as a passive solar house. To hide this dwelling further the roof was covered in a wild flower mat that would blend it with the surrounding fields and make its visual impact from the road low. Its conceptual reading is thus a wall into which one descends into the rabbit hole of the unknown private life below.

This entry was awarded a high commendation in 2008 and exhibited at the Oxford Competition on Architectural Education July 22nd -23rd in Oxford as part of the prize giving ceremony.
